After graduating from Newcastle with a degree in Economics and Management, Austen enjoyed a sales role at Bradford mill J.H.Clissold. Five years later he left to join Berwin & Berwin, mens’ tailoring manufacturers. He became Sales Director aged 29 but had only ever wanted his own business since being a boy. With the experience gained from his early career he launched Buxton Pickles in 2001 from the attic of his home. Austen also owns Norton & Townsend bespoke tailors.
I am incredibly proud of Buxton Pickles, the brilliant people in our company and the things we have achieved together. It has been challenging at times but someone once told me to avoid sea-sickness keep your eyes on the horizon. It works.
Nige has spent his entire career in textiles and clothing. He started as Assistant Accountant at J.H.Clissold in Bradford where he qualified (ACMA) in 1992 and was later joined by new graduate salesman Austen. A few years at a Huddersfield weaver from 1998 was followed by six years with another clothing company, Moorcroft. He joined Buxton Pickles as Finance Director in 2007 and has been instrumental in facilitating significant growth through tight financial control and strategic planning. He tells us he makes a decent cup of coffee too (we are yet to see it).
Thirty one years in the industry is a long time but I’m getting the hang of it…
Design & Technical Director
Ingrid started her career as a machinist in a tailoring factory. After two years of rapid progression her manager told her that she was wasting her talent and encouraged her to leave and study fashion design and pattern cutting. She graduated with flying colours and spent seven years at outerwear manufacturers working on patterns and development for everything from waterproof clothing to rucksacks. Moving back to the world of tailoring she enjoyed six years at Praxis followed by two at Berwin & Berwin where she met Austen. Ingrid was Buxton Pickles’ first employee and remains a cornerstone of the business. Her wealth of experience and ability to create perfect fitting, beautifully produced ladieswear is a priceless asset to the business.
I enjoy a joke like everyone but trust me, it’s no laughing matter if you interrupt me when I’m digitising a pattern...
After A-levels Nick went straight into a start-up clothing business importing second-hand Levi 501’s from the States. His father was a serial entrepreneur in the fashion industry and a big influence. Nick then spent 8 years in branded wholesale as European Sales manager for US group Anne Klein and 5 years on the supply side setting up a new UK office for a Hong Kong based company. 3½ years at Li & Fung followed where he set up new division targeting premium UK retailers with multi-product womenswear.
In January 2016 Nick joined Buxton Pickles as Sales Director to develop softer product and broaden the company’s product and supply base. His grasp of customer’s requirements and determination to bring great design to life has led to great successes in the first years at BP.
Oh, and he’s a really nice guy.
As a kid, within the family business, I grew up surrounded by garmentos – a New York term I think. I guess it was fairly inevitable that I would end up following in their footsteps and being one myself!
Salman graduated in Economics in 1995 and started his career in a denim and casualwear factory. Building on his experience of manufacturing, he moved to WW Group in 2001, controlling imports and merchandising menswear, womenswear and childrenswear.
Salman left WW as Merchandising Manager in 2014 and joined Buxton Pickles at the ideal time as the business became increasingly involved Far East production.
After two years managing the merchandising team he was promoted to the Board in 2016 as Operations Director with responsibility for merchandising, production, purchasing and logistics.
Salman is passionate about service and works incredibly hard to ensure our customers’ orders are properly taken care of. He is not old but brings a level of wisdom, logic and thoughtfulness to the often chaotic industry we are in.
He is also very kind and has even been known to share his chips on Fish & Chips Friday…
Sixteen of us are based at our head office in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, where we manage design, sourcing, patterns, quality, merchandising, purchasing, logistics, account management and finance.
There are two more of us based in London now and nineteen more are employed at our sample line in Prostejov, Czech Republic.
That’s thirty-seven altogether.
We are a fairly diverse bunch of people – designers, merchandisers, pattern cutters, sales, machinists, accountants and managers. What unites our cheerful team is a shared passion for creating beautiful clothes. And we all love happy customers.
